When you’re running around between work and all of your other commitments, it’s really hard to make healthy snack choices. I know this first-hand. I’m here today to share some healthy snack ideas that will hopefully make your life a little easier! Some of these need to be “prepared”, but some of them are my go-to favorites straight from the grocery store! I’m not a nutritionist or a dietician, but from my own personal research I think these are pretty healthy options. In no particular order…
Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies
I made the switch from Goldfish to these. I’m sure these aren’t the healthiest thing in the entire world, but the way it see it, they are better than eating a bag of potato chips. They’re the perfect crossover between Whales and Goldfish and they are made with organic ingredients.
Avocado Toast
I looooooove avocados. There are a few variations of avocado toast that I really like. The first one is just basic whole wheat toast with an avocado on top. I also really love putting an avocado on top of a bagel! My favorite bagels to do this with are everything bagels. To make it a little healthier, you can use a bagel thin. My secret to avocado-anything is using garlic salt on top.
Apples
There are so many ways you can eat apples. My favorite kind is Honeycrisp. I like to eat them either plain or sliced up with some peanut butter. One of my favorite things about apples is that they are super inexpensive and easy to find – every grocery store sells them! A little tip – keeping your apples in the fridge makes them last way longer.
Smoothies
Smoothies are another super versatile snack or meal idea. There are literally thousands of different smoothie recipes out there. Check out Pinterest if you need some ideas. I don’t usually follow a recipe, I just throw in some fresh or frozen fruit with some yogurt and juice. Smoothie bowls are another delicious snack! Make your smoothie a little bit thicker and add some fresh fruit and granola to the top. I also like to add Chia seeds and agave syrup.
Chips + Salsa
The “health factor” of this lies in the kind of chips and salsa you eat. Salsa is made of vegetables, so it contains lots of healthy goodness! Check out Trader Joes or Whole Foods for some healthier chip options. This is the perfect snack to satisfy your salt cravings!
Muffins
Muffins are such a great on-the-go breakfast or snack. I found THIS recipe on Pinterest that I tried out and they are super yummy! These are actually really easy to make. You throw all the ingredients into a blender and pop them into a mini muffin tin and bake at 375 for 12 minutes. You need 2 medium bananas, 1 cup of plain greek yogurt, 2 large eggs, 2 cups of rolled oats, 2-3 tbsp honey, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips and 1/2 tsp baking soda. Throw a few in your backpack before you leave for class and you have a super easy snack in case you get hungry!
Wraps
Wraps are another great snack/lunch idea. Again, there are so many ideas on Pinterest for these. Start with a whole grain wrap or tortilla and add whatever you want inside! I like to add chicken, cheese, avocado. I really want to try out THIS buffalo chicken wrap recipe from Pinterest.
Oatmeal or Yogurt with Fruit
Both oatmeal and yogurt are healthy snack ideas. Adding fruit on top makes them extra healthy. Try to pick an oatmeal that doesn’t have a ton of extra added sugar. For yogurt, I love greek yogurt. I love to add raspberries, strawberries, bananas, and pineapple to mine.
Cheese
Cheese is one of those things that’s good for you in moderation. Cheese is high in protein and calcium, but it can be a high calorie snack. Try to stick to low-fat cheese and don’t eat a whole block in one sitting. My favorite kind to snack on is cheddar! I cube up some before I leave for the day and stick it in my lunch box.
Protein Bars
I have tried my fair share of protein bars. I love that you can just keep these in your backpack and your car in case you get hungry. My all time favorite is the peanut butter cookie Larabar. I also really like the new Kind Protein Bars. I have found it pretty hard to find good protein bars, so if you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments below!
The best way to make healthy choices is to read labels. A good rule of thumb to go by is if something has a bunch of ingredients you can’t pronounce, you probably shouldn’t eat it (or at least only eat a little) I’ll admit, I’m not a super healthy person. I have found that I spend a lot of time snacking during the day, so opting for some of these choices leaves me feeling healthy all day long! What are your go-to healthy snacks? Leave a comment letting me know!
